Essay Questions: Marking Guide for Teachers and Parents

  1. (a) A form of energy that flows from a hot object to a cold object (2). (b) Conduction, convection, radiation (1 mark each, total 3).
  2. Conduction is the transfer of heat from particle to particle in a solid without the solid moving (3). Examples: a metal spoon in hot soup; the handle of a metal pot becomes hot (1 mark each, total 2). One mark for good expression.
  3. Fill a beaker with water and drop in some potassium permanganate crystals (1). Heat the beaker from below (1). Coloured water rises in the middle (1) and sinks at the sides (1). This shows convection currents (1).
  4. Metals are good conductors so heat passes quickly to the food (2). Wood or plastic are poor conductors so the handle does not burn our hands (2).
  5. Any four: cooking with metal pots, ventilation in houses, light clothes in hot weather, vacuum flask, drying clothes and fish in the sun, ironing, roofing with shiny sheets (1 mark each, total 4; 1 mark for clear explanation).
