English Language is the medium of instruction in Ghana’s schools and one of the most examined subjects at both BECE and WASSCE. English Language by Level
Pre-School and Kindergarten
At this level, English learning focuses on phonics, letter recognition, simple sight words, and listening skills. Children begin to speak simple English sentences, sing rhymes, and respond to basic instructions in English.
Primary School (Basic 1 to Basic 6)
Primary English covers phonics and reading fluency, sentence construction, punctuation, basic grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns), creative writing, and reading comprehension. By Basic 6, students should be able to read a passage independently, write a short composition, and identify common grammatical structures.
Junior High School (Basic 7 to Basic 9)
JHS English Language is one of the four core subjects examined at BECE. Topics include:
- Comprehension – Reading unseen passages and answering questions on meaning, vocabulary, and inference
- Summary Writing – Identifying and condensing key points from a passage into your own words
- Composition Writing – Essays, letters (formal and informal), narratives, argumentative writing, and descriptive writing
- Grammar and Usage – Tenses, concord, parts of speech, reported speech, active and passive voice, prepositions, conjunctions, and sentence types
- Vocabulary – Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, proverbs, word formation, and contextual meaning
- Oral English – Stress, intonation, rhyme, and vowel and consonant sounds
Senior High School (SHS 1 to SHS 3)
SHS English Language expands all JHS skills and adds literature study, advanced essay types, and wider reading. WASSCE English preparation materials include comprehension practice, summary writing, essay revision, and grammar drills.
Tips for Success in English
Reading regularly is the single most effective way to improve your English. Try to read something in English every day, whether a novel, a newspaper, or a short story. Write often, even if it is just a few sentences in a journal. Pay attention to grammar rules and practise them in your own writing.
