What Pre-School Children Learn in Ghana

The NaCCA curriculum for Pre-School focuses on developing children’s readiness for formal schooling through play, activities, songs, and stories. The main areas of learning are:

Literacy and Language

  • Listening and responding to spoken instructions
  • Recognizing and naming letters of the alphabet (A to Z)
  • Phonics: learning the sounds that letters make
  • Simple sight words: words like “the,” “and,” “is,” “a,” “I”
  • Telling and listening to simple stories
  • Expressing themselves in simple sentences

Numeracy

  • Counting forward and backward from 1 to 20
  • Recognizing and writing numbers 1 to 10
  • Comparing sets: more than, less than, the same
  • Sorting objects by colour, shape, and size
  • Recognizing basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle
  • Simple patterns: identifying and extending ABAB patterns

Our World

  • Knowing their own name, the names of family members, and their community
  • Naming parts of the body
  • Knowing days of the week and simple weather concepts
  • Basic health and hygiene habits

Creative Development

  • Drawing, colouring, and cutting
  • Singing songs and reciting rhymes
  • Role play and imaginative games

For Teachers and Parents

Learning at this age must be active, playful, and joyful. Children learn best through doing, touching, singing, drawing, and exploring. Avoid long periods of sitting and writing. Use songs, games, and real objects to teach concepts. The goal is not just to produce children who can write letters and numbers, but children who love learning.
