Career Technology at Education Always
Career Technology (CT) is a practical subject taught at JHS level in Ghana that introduces students to technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills. It combines elements of agriculture, home management, visual arts, and technical drawing to prepare students for the world of work and further technical education. At Education Always, our Career Technology content follows the NaCCA curriculum for Basic 7 to Basic 9.
Strands in JHS Career Technology
Strand 1: Agriculture and Environment
- Importance of agriculture to the Ghanaian economy
- Types of farming and farm management practices
- Soil: types, composition, fertility, and conservation
- Crop production: land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting
- Animal husbandry: poultry, goats, sheep, and cattle
- Common farm pests, diseases, and their control
- Environmental care: waste management, pollution, and conservation
Strand 2: Home Management
- Food and nutrition: food groups, balanced diet, and meal planning
- Food preparation and safety: cooking methods and hygiene in the kitchen
- Clothing and textile: fibres, fabrics, care of clothing, and simple sewing skills
- Home management: budgeting, resource management, and housekeeping
- Child care and family health
Strand 3: Visual Arts and Crafts
- Elements of art: line, shape, colour, texture, and form
- Drawing and painting techniques
- Ghanaian traditional crafts: beading, weaving, pottery, and basketry
- Fabric decoration: batik, tie-dye, and block printing
- Design and problem solving through art
Strand 4: Technical Skills
- Technical drawing: lines, symbols, orthographic projections, and simple drawings
- Basic woodwork: tools, joints, and simple constructions
- Basic metalwork: tools, processes, and safety
- Simple electrical work: circuits, components, and safety
- Basic masonry and construction concepts
Strand 5: Entrepreneurship and Business Skills
- Meaning of entrepreneurship and qualities of a good entrepreneur
- Identifying business opportunities in Ghana
- Simple business planning and record keeping
- Marketing: identifying customers and selling a product or service
- Savings and financial management for young people
Why Career Technology Matters
Career Technology gives Ghanaian students practical skills that can be used immediately, whether in the home, on a farm, in a community workshop, or in a small business. Many students who develop a strong foundation in CT at JHS go on to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes or become successful entrepreneurs.
