French Language at Education Always

French is an important language subject in Ghanaian schools, taught from Basic 4 through to Senior High School. Ghana is surrounded by French-speaking countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo, making French a practical and valuable language for trade, travel, and career opportunities across West Africa. French Language by Level

Primary School (Basic 4 to Basic 6)

At this level, French focuses on introducing basic spoken and written French. Students learn greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week, classroom vocabulary, simple sentences about themselves and their families, and basic present tense structures. The goal is to build confidence and curiosity in French communication.

Junior High School (Basic 7 to Basic 9)

JHS French builds on the foundations laid at Primary level. Topics include:

  • Oral French – Conversations on everyday topics such as home, school, food, shopping, and the weather
  • Grammar – Verb conjugation (present, past, and future tenses), nouns and articles, adjective agreement, pronouns, negation, and question formation
  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding short French texts and answering questions in French
  • Writing – Guided compositions, letters, and short paragraph writing in French
  • Vocabulary – Thematic word groups covering school, family, health, travel, occupations, and the environment

Senior High School

SHS French extends communicative competence and introduces more complex grammar, literary texts, and essay writing. Students preparing for WASSCE French will find revision materials covering all major topic areas.

Study Tips for French

Practise speaking French out loud every day, even if it is just repeating new vocabulary. Learn verbs in context, not in isolation. Keep a vocabulary notebook and review it regularly. Listen to simple French audio or songs to train your ear to the sounds of the language.
