Essay Questions: Marking Guide for Teachers and Parents
- (a) The process by which a cell divides to form new cells (2). (b) Mitosis (1) and meiosis (1).
- Any four (1 mark each): mitosis gives two cells, meiosis gives four; mitosis gives identical cells, meiosis gives different cells; mitosis keeps the chromosome number, meiosis halves it; mitosis has one division, meiosis has two; mitosis occurs in body cells, meiosis in sex organs; mitosis is for growth and repair, meiosis is for making sex cells.
- Prophase: chromosomes become visible and the nuclear membrane breaks down (2). Metaphase: chromosomes line up at the middle of the cell (2). Anaphase: chromosome copies are pulled to opposite ends (2). Telophase: two new nuclei form and the cell splits into two (2).
- Any three (1 mark each): growth, repair of wounds, replacement of old cells, reproduction through sex cells.
- (a) 23 chromosomes (1). (b) 46 chromosomes (1). Sex cells have half the number, and the sperm and egg join to restore it (1).
