Essay Questions: Marking Guide for Teachers and Parents
- Producer: a green plant that makes its own food, e.g. grass (2). Consumer: an organism that feeds on other organisms, e.g. goat (2). Decomposer: breaks down dead matter, e.g. a mushroom (2). One mark for each meaning and one for each example.
- A correct chain beginning with a producer, e.g. maize, rat, snake, hawk (2). Arrows in the right direction (1). Roles named correctly: producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer (2).
- At least six organisms shown (2). Arrows correct (2). Starts with producers and ends with a top consumer (1).
- Organisms use much of the energy for movement, growth and keeping warm (1). Some energy is lost as heat (1). Some parts are not eaten or digested (1). Only about 10% passes to the next level (1).
