Our World Our People (OWOP) helps young children understand the world they live in, starting with the people and places closest to them. At KG 1, we begin with what children know best: their family and their school.
My Family
A family is a group of people who live together and care for one another. Every child belongs to a family. Families in Ghana come in different sizes and shapes, and that is perfectly fine.
Members of the Family
| Family Member | Their Role |
|---|---|
| Father (Daddy) | Works to provide food and money for the family. Protects the family. Helps with decisions. |
| Mother (Mummy) | Cares for the children. Cooks food. Keeps the home clean. Also works outside the home in many families. |
| Brother | A male child in the family. An older brother may help care for younger ones. |
| Sister | A female child in the family. Sisters often play together and help each other. |
| Grandfather | The father of your mother or father. He is an older person with a lot of wisdom. |
| Grandmother | The mother of your mother or father. She often tells stories and keeps family traditions. |
Types of Families in Ghana
Nuclear family: Father, mother, and their children living together. This is the most common type.
Extended family: Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all living together or nearby and supporting each other. This is very common in Ghana.
Single-parent family: Some children live with just their mother or just their father. This family is just as complete and loving as any other.
How Families Show Love
- Cooking food for each other
- Helping when someone is sick
- Going to church or mosque together
- Playing together
- Saying “I love you” and giving hugs
- Praying together
Classroom Activity: Draw Your Family
Ask each child to draw the people in their family and write or say each person’s name. Let them share their drawing with the class and describe who each person is. This builds speaking confidence and personal identity.
My School
School is a special place where children come to learn, play, and make friends. It is important for children to feel safe and happy at school so that they can learn well.
People at School
| Person | Their Role |
|---|---|
| Headmaster / Headmistress | The leader of the school. Makes important decisions. Makes sure the school runs well. |
| Teacher | Teaches the children. Helps them learn new things every day. Keeps children safe in the classroom. |
| Pupils / Students | The children who come to school to learn. They should listen, work hard, and be kind to each other. |
| School Caretaker / Janitor | Keeps the school clean and tidy. Makes repairs when things are broken. |
Places in the School
- Classroom: Where we sit and learn. It has desks, chairs, a blackboard, and books.
- Playground: Where we play during break time. We run, jump, and play games here.
- Toilet / Washroom: Where we go to use the bathroom. We must always wash our hands after.
- School office: Where the headmaster or headmistress works.
- School garden: Some schools have a garden where children help grow plants.
School Rules
Rules help everyone in the school stay safe and happy. Common school rules include:
- Come to school on time.
- Wear your uniform neatly.
- Listen to your teacher.
- Be kind to your classmates.
- Do not fight or bully others.
- Keep your classroom clean.
- Raise your hand before you speak.
