Level: KG 2 (Kindergarten Year 2) | Subject: Our World Our People (OWOP) | Topic: My Community and Community Helpers | Curriculum: Ghana NaCCA

In KG 1, children learned about their family and school. In KG 2, we zoom out a little and look at the wider community they live in: the neighbourhood, the town, the people who work to keep everything going.

What Is a Community?

A community is a group of people who live in the same area and share many of the same places and services. Your community might be your village, your neighbourhood in town, or your suburb. The people in your community are your neighbours.

Communities have things like:

  • Houses where families live
  • Markets where people buy and sell food and goods
  • Schools where children learn
  • Churches, mosques, or shrines where people worship
  • Clinics and hospitals where sick people are treated
  • Roads and paths that connect places
  • Wells, taps, or water points where people get water

Community Helpers

A community helper is any person who works to help other members of the community. Many different jobs help keep our community safe, healthy, clean, and running well.

Community Helper What They Do
Teacher Teaches children in school so they can learn and grow.
Doctor / Nurse Treats sick people and helps them get better. Gives vaccines to prevent illness.
Farmer Grows the food we eat – yams, cassava, maize, tomatoes, plantain.
Market seller / Trader Sells goods at the market so families can get what they need.
Police officer Keeps the community safe. Directs traffic. Catches people who break the law.
Firefighter Puts out fires. Rescues people who are in danger.
Driver / Trotro driver Takes people from one place to another safely.
Refuse collector Collects rubbish and keeps the streets clean.
Pastor / Imam Leads religious worship and guides the community spiritually.
Builder / Mason Builds the houses and structures people live and work in.

Class Discussion

Ask children: “Who helps your family in the community? Has a doctor or nurse ever helped you? What do the market women do for your family?” Let children share their experiences. This makes learning personal and meaningful.

How We Can Help Our Community

Being a good community member means doing your part to help, not just benefiting from what others do. Even a KG 2 child can help their community in small but important ways:

  • Do not throw rubbish on the ground. Put it in a bin.
  • Greet your neighbours politely.
  • Help an elderly person carry something heavy.
  • Do not damage public property like benches, walls, or water points.
  • Be kind to everyone – not just people you know.
  • If you see something dangerous (like a fire or an accident), tell an adult immediately.

Animals in Our Community

KG 2 children also learn to recognise animals that are common in Ghanaian communities and understand whether they are domestic (kept by people) or wild (living in the bush or forests).

Domestic Animals Wild Animals
Dog, Cat, Goat, Sheep, Cow, Chicken, Duck, Rabbit, Guinea fowl Lion, Elephant, Monkey, Snake, Crocodile, Grasscutter, Deer, Eagle, Chimpanzee

Remember: Domestic animals live with or near people and are useful to them (for food, company, or work). Wild animals live in the wild and are generally not safe to handle.
