Essay Questions

  1. (a) Define force. (b) State the unit of force and the instrument used to measure it. (c) Name three effects of a force on an object. (6 marks)
  2. Explain two advantages and two disadvantages of friction. (4 marks)
  3. (a) What is inertia? (b) State Newton’s first law of motion. (c) Explain why passengers should wear seat belts. (6 marks)

Essay Questions: Marking Guide for Teachers and Parents

  1. (a) A push or a pull (1). (b) Newton (1); spring balance or newton meter (1). (c) Any three: start motion, stop motion, change speed, change direction, change shape (1 mark each).
  2. Advantages (any two): lets us walk, helps brakes work, holds nails in wood (1 mark each). Disadvantages (any two): wears out parts, wastes energy as heat, slows movement (1 mark each).
  3. (a) The tendency of an object to resist a change in its state of rest or motion (2). (b) An object stays at rest, or moves at constant speed in a straight line, unless an unbalanced force acts on it (2). (c) In a sudden stop, bodies tend to keep moving forward, and the seat belt holds them back (2).
  4. Any four uses: compass, door catch, electric bell, speaker, separating iron from waste, fridge door (1 mark each, total 4). Care (any two): do not drop, do not heat, keep away from phones and cards, store in pairs (1 mark each, total 2).
  5. Hang a bar magnet on a string or place it on a float (1). Bring the north pole of a second magnet near the north pole of the first, and the hanging magnet moves away (1). Bring the north pole near the south pole, and it moves towards it (1). This shows like poles repel and unlike poles attract (1).
