Essay Questions: Marking Guide for Teachers and Parents
- Luminous objects produce their own light, e.g. the Sun, a candle (2). Non-luminous objects do not make light, e.g. the Moon, a book (2). We see the Moon because it reflects light from the Sun (2).
- Take three cards with holes in the centre (1). Place them in a line with a candle behind them (1). Look through the holes (1). The flame is seen only when the holes are in a straight line (1). Moving one card stops the light, showing it travels in straight lines (1).
- Transparent allows all light to pass, e.g. clear glass (2). Translucent allows part of the light, e.g. frosted glass (2). Opaque allows no light, e.g. wood (2).
- The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection (2). Any three: same size, upright, same distance behind the mirror, laterally inverted (1 mark each).
- (a) The splitting of white light into its colours (1). (b) Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (1 for correct order; accept 6 or 7 correct). (c) Rainbow (1).
