Essay Questions
- Write the passé composé of manger and aller for je and nous. (4 marks)
- Write five sentences about what you did last weekend. Use time words such as hier, samedi dernier or il y a deux jours. (5 marks)
- Put these sentences in the negative: (a) J’ai mangé. (b) Elle est partie. (c) Nous avons fini. (3 marks)
- Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense (imparfait or passé composé): (a) Il (pleuvoir) quand je (sortir). (b) Nous (dormir) quand le téléphone (sonner). (4 marks)
- Write the past participle of these ten verbs: avoir, être, faire, prendre, voir, dire, mettre, pouvoir, vouloir, boire. (5 marks)

- j’ai mangé, nous avons mangé, je suis allé (or allée), nous sommes allés (or allées). One mark each.
- One mark for each correct sentence. Expect: Hier, j’ai lavé mes habits. Samedi dernier, je suis allé au marché. Il y a deux jours, nous avons regardé un match. Check the auxiliary and the participle, and agreement with être.
- (a) Je n’ai pas mangé. (b) Elle n’est pas partie. (c) Nous n’avons pas fini. One mark each. Ne goes before the auxiliary and pas after it.
- (a) pleuvait, suis sorti (or sortie) (b) dormions, a sonné. One mark for each correct verb. Imparfait for the background and passé composé for the action that interrupts.
- eu, été, fait, pris, vu, dit, mis, pu, voulu, bu. Half a mark each.
